I grew up in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia. I graduated from Athens Academy. I went to the University of Georgia, which makes me a big Georgia fan. At Georgia, I earned a degree in Family Development. I went to Shorter College and earned my certification to teach Early Childhood Education.
My husband went to the University of Georgia as well. He played baseball for Georgia. We have been married for 34 years. We have three children. My daughter Whitney Brookins teaches 6th grade science at West End Elementary. She is married to Matthew Brookins who teaches math at Calhoun City Schools. They live in Calhoun. My second daughter, Mary Lynn, works at Rome News Tribune and does standup comedy. My son and his wife live in Atlanta. Thomas is a fund raiser for the Special Olympics. Mandi is a CPA and works for Rheam. Whitney and Mary Lynn graduated from Georgia Southern University. Thomas graduated from the University of Alabama. I have one grandchild, Emmaline.
I currently teach 4th-grade math and science. I have taught 5th-grade math and science for 13 years. I have also taught kindergarten and third grade.
I love to garden, which most anyone can see if you look in the back of the school. I have also learned, with my students, how to build things with pallets. You will also see these creations behind the school. I believe that all children need to find their gift and learn from that. Children need to find something they are good in and then expand their learning from that point.
