    Ms. Sarah Brown

    Science - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

I realized that I wanted to pursue teaching as a career when I was a junior at Adairsville High School. Because I knew so many incredible teachers who had graduated from Berry College, I was positive I would love Berry. As it turns out, I was right. Now, why I decided to major in physics when I had only taken a freshman physical science course in high school, I'll never know. However, I'm so glad I did! Physics absolutely amazed me, and I was hooked. I obtained my bachelor's with a physics major and secondary education minor four years later. My high school sweetheart, Jason, and I got married a month after graduation. After one year of teaching at North Murray High School in Chatsworth and a long commute, I applied for a position at Rome High and have worked here ever since. Currently, I am attending Western Governors University and plan to graduate with a master's in secondary mathematics education in the spring of 2019. I cannot think of a better job than my current one-- teaching honors physics and astronomy at Rome High School. The school, the students, and the community are phenomenal. Go Wolves!

    Science - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

I developed a love for biology as a child. My passion continued throughout high school and college. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Shorter College. Afterward, I worked as a Lab Analyst for six years in a microbiology and gas chromatography lab. It is within that time, that I gained extensive laboratory and analysis skills. Although I had a wonderful job as a lab analyst, I longed to do something where I could make a difference in the lives of our youth. Teaching had always been in the back of my mind. After six years, I decided to pursue an education degree. I followed my heart and went to the University of West Georgia where I received my teaching certification and student taught biology. I continued my education at Walden University where I received a Master’s Degree in Science Education. I credit my master’s degree for inspiring me to be the teacher I am today. It focused on inquiry and the importance of teaching science for true and lasting understanding. Fortunately, biology is a subject that is relevant and naturally lends itself to scientific inquiry. It promotes learning by “doing.” You will find my students up and “doing” biology every day. It encompasses many wonderful, interesting sciences, such as genetics, biochemistry, cell processes, classification, evolution, and ecology. I believe that teaching is a calling in my life. Teaching and interacting with teenagers comes naturally to me. Designing investigations that engage students EVERY day is my passion. Teaching science at its best is when students design investigations, gather evidence and draw conclusions on their own. My ultimate desire is for my students to go one step further and apply what they learn to real-world problems. I believe that giving student autonomy in learning helps them take ownership and experience success.

Seven years ago, I was 27, and I had finally started my life. Teaching is a calling, not a job. I was always passionate about teaching social studies, but I never knew how to be happy in the other professions I had previously held. Once I started teaching, I never wanted to do anything else. The intrinsic value of seeing a student finally understand and master a new concept was indescribable. I completed my undergrad degree at the University of Georgia in 2009. I also completed graduate school at Valdosta State in the spring of 2019. I coach cross country and soccer because they are both hobbies and passions of mine. Teaching has given me the opportunity to change lives for the better. Never hesitate to drop by my classroom if you ever need someone to chat with. Communication is the key! Not just for our students, but for our faculty as well.

    Ms. Jenna Hemphill

hemphill I obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from the University of West Georgia in 2016. After graduating, I worked in the mental health field at Murphy Harpst Children’s Center and Highland Rivers. I transitioned into education in 2019 starting my journey at Rome High School. Currently, I am working on my Master’s Degree in Special Education.

I began this lifelong journey in education as a child, reading every book I could find and making my friends play school. I now hold a Master’s degree in English Education from Kennesaw State University and have taught for over 20 years- in various settings from elementary to university, from students ages 6 to 60. Mr. David Musgrove

English Language Arts - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

musgrove I was born in a small town in Southwest Georgia named Colquitt. It is the largest town in the smallest county in Georgia. Compared to Colquitt, Rome is the big city. I grew up with a love for characters and stories. In high school, I found myself drawn to my English classes.  It was there, and in the rows of my local library, that I discovered worlds beyond my small town’s borders. After graduating Miller County High School, I attended Bainbridge College and then Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. There I found like-minded people and discovered that I loved discussing literature almost as much as reading it. I decided to become a teacher because I could not think of a better career than talking about stories with other people. I still can’t. I took my first job teaching in Waycross, Georgia. In a town I had never visited, I discovered the joys of interacting with students and engaging young minds. After seven years, it was time to move on. Following a short stint at Callaway High school in LaGrange, I came to Rome High School. In the last thirteen years,  I have built a life here. I found love, I raised my son, and I grew as an educator by completing my Masters degree from Berry College. I found myself and found my profession. I discovered that it is more than simply discussing literature. It is engaging students to help them prepare for the world that awaits them. It is doing my part to make the world better by trying my best to give each of my kids what they need to succeed. It is the best job in the world.

I graduated from Dalton State in the spring of 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in biology. I worked in an adhesive lab. My dream was to work in a lab after graduation. After almost a year of working there, I did not realize how isolating it was. The opportunity arose, so I took it. I got my first teaching job at North Murray High School. For the past six years, I have been fortunate enough to have been selected as an Advanced Placement Spanish Language Reader, where I travel to Ohio to grade AP tests. As a professional, I want my students not only to learn the grammatical structure of the sentences and parts of speech, I want them to see the importance of being bilingual and the opportunities that speaking another language will provide for them. It is important to me that my students feel confident in the classroom and I try to challenge them to do their best. Their accomplishments and interest to continue their studies up to the AP Spanish level, majoring or minoring in Spanish and beyond, inspires me to continue doing my job as an instructor. My students challenge me and encourage me to be a better educator each day.

English Language Arts - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

I graduated from Berry College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in secondary education, and I have been teaching for six years. I teach because I had some great literature teachers along the way who led me to fall in love with reading and writing in high school, and I found a deep love of teaching throughout my student teaching experiences in college. During my time at Berry College, I also worked with WinShape Camps in the summers. Both Berry and WinShape emphasize a "head, heart, and hands" approach to teaching, which has made its way into my classroom through our hands-on PBL projects, my open door policy, and my high expectations for my students. In the summers, I lead international trips for Rome High School students with EF Tours, which provide students with opportunities for amazing adventures as well as emphasize a discovery-style approach to learning. So far, we have traveled to Belize and Greece, and I am taking a group to Costa Rica in the summer of 2019. In addition to teaching and traveling, I love running and hiking with my dog, cooking, reading, and just about anything involving water! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at cpierce@rcs.rome.ga.us.

    Mr. Veda Ruiz

Social Studies / ESOL - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

My name is Mr. Ruiz and I am beginning my 18th year as an educator. I was born in San Antonio, Texas and moved to Georgia when I was eight years old for my father's job in the Air Force and Lockheed Aeronautics. Upon graduating from Harrison High School in 1996, I began my college experience at Valdosta State University and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education (Social Sciences). I am a Social Studies teacher with an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) endorsement and am excited about my role at Rome High School as a push-in teacher for English Learners in World History and Environmental Science. This September will mark five years of marriage to my beautiful wife. We have two sons who are eight and four. We just returned from a New England vacation where we visited historic Fenway Park for a baseball game and enjoyed the beauty of Acadia National Park, which included whale watching, beautiful coastal views, and delicious lobster! When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my family and being the best husband and father I can be. I taught middle school for fourteen years in the Atlanta Metropolitan area and enjoyed preparing 6-8th graders for high school while teaching them about World Studies and Georgia Studies. For the past three years I taught US History at a nearby high school and had such a wonderful time teaching Juniors the history of the United States. What I really enjoyed about teaching high school students is that they are just a few years away from leaping into their futures and working towards their aspirations. Building positive relationships with students is a must for me and I am thankful to be a stepping stone on their educational paths to find their way in the world and guiding them in their learning. The biggest reward for me as a teacher is not a score on a test, but the positive impact I have the opportunity to make on my students each day. Teaching is my calling and I am eager to meet the wonderful students of Rome High School and begin "working on the work" to ensure that "all students will graduate from Rome High School prepared for college or work." Go Wolves! I am here for you. Parents please e-mail me with your concerns or questions regarding your child's progress at Rome High School. Here is to a great year! vruiz@rcs.rome.ga.us

DrR I was born and raised in a small town called Sztum in northern Poland. I attended the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and I graduated in 1990. After graduation, I started work in a research institute studying animal physiology. While working in that laboratory, I was sent to North Dakota State University in Fargo to expand my research. After six months, my wife, Dorota, and then nine-month-old daughter, Agata, joined me in Fargo. We moved to Athens, Georgia in the Fall of 1993 where I started a Ph.D. program in Toxicology at the University of Georgia. In Athens, we welcomed our second daughter, Weronika. Following my graduation in 1998, for several years, I researched animal biotechnology and genetics in academia and industry focusing on cloning pigs and cattle. In 2006, I chose to shift my career and became a high-school teacher. I started my teaching adventure in the Newton County School System. For the past 8 years, I taught various science subjects like Chemistry, Oceanography, and Physics in Athens at Cedar Shoals High School. After residing in Athens, GA for 26 years, my wife and I decided to move to Rome, GA to teach together at Rome High School. Mr. Randy Stafford

AP Physics 1&2, AP Computer Science - SCIENCE - ROME HIGH SCHOOL

stafford I received a bachelor of science in physics from Texas A & M University. While working on my master’s at Georgia Tech, life happened and I had to suspend my education and get a job. What I planned on being a few semesters off turned out to be a few decades. In the meantime, I had several careers—owned some restaurants, did a little stint on the radio, started an Internet business, and I became the administrator of a fairly large church. The church ran a private school and I was eventually asked to teach physics, part-time. I agreed and promptly fell in love with teaching. It took several years but I rearranged my entire life so that I could teach full time. The rearrangement involved finishing my masters, moving to Rome, and taking a job at Rome High. That was eight years ago. Now I teach AP Physics 1 and 2, as well as AP Computer Science to the brightest, most hardworking, students imaginable. As science department head I get to work with an amazing and talented team of other science teachers, at a great school. Every day I love coming to work.

It is a real honor and privilege to teach at such a fine institution in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I am from Lincoln, Nebraska and have degrees from Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in HVAC/R technology and German Literature and Culture. During this time I spent six months in Berlin, Germany on a study abroad and passed my C2 language certification. After much thought and encouragement, I decided to apply for a Master's degree in German Philology at The University of Alabama, which was an experience I will be forever grateful for. In Tuscaloosa I taught German for two years on and off campus before graduating and joining the team here in Rome. I have a lot of hobbies and passions, like studying language, skateboarding, playing mandolin, taking care of my cats, and keeping up with pretty much every sport. I like forward to getting to know you all and cheering on the Wolves. Mach's gut und bis bald!
