STEM

STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM is an approach to education that expands current teaching models for science and mathematics by incorporating technology and engineering concepts into standardized instruction. STEM programs are intended to transform a typical classroom into one that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, and investigative learning. The demand for jobs that require STEM skills continues to grow and America needs a world-class STEM workforce to address the challenges of the 21st century. STEM literacy is imperative for today's students to become the strong, innovative workforce of tomorrow.

Rome City Schools is pleased to announce that three of our elementary schools are STEM certified by the Georgia Department of Education.

Elm Street students are learning through a business and engineering design model as early as Kindergarten. Through entrepreneurial experiences, the school aims to teach students the importance of social awareness and giving back to the community.

Main is an engineering focused STEM school. Students use the Engineering Design Process to solve problems in a variety of circumstances. Students engage in daily tasks, as well as year long projects. At Main, we believe in finding real world solutions through collaboration, innovation, recycling, and a sustainable garden.

West End Elementary designed and implemented a STEM program for all of their elementary-aged students (Pre-K-6th Grade). The purpose of our program is to:

to educate with rigor and relevance
embed the basic tenets of STEM in an integrated classroom with cutting-edge technology and hands-on activities meeting the Georgia Standards of Excellence without compromising daily quality teaching and learning
preserve pollinators

STEM empowers our students to take responsibility for their world on both a local and global scale by being aware of what and where they eat. All students are learning the basic life cycles of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats, and friends of the pollinators, such as worms.

Through long-term problem-based learning activities, students have designed and are maintaining pollinator gardens, composting with worms, creating eco-friendly pesticides, and suiting up to tend the WEE Bees. In addition to self-awareness, students and teachers are educating the community about the importance of sustaining pollinators.
