Rome High School will be offering a new sport for girls for the first time in the fall of 2025, as the first Lady Wolves Flag Football Team will take the field.
Flag football continues to be one of the fastest-growing sports in the country and the state, and Rome High will now have a team thanks to a generous grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.
“We’re celebrating a major upgrade to our athletic program — all made possible by a generous grant from Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation,” Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Holland says. “Thanks to this grant, we’re thrilled to launch our very first girls flag football team at Rome High School. This funding covers essential start-up costs and gives our female athletes an exciting new opportunity to compete. Girls flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and with colleges now offering scholarships, it opens doors for our students to shine at the next level! We’re proud of our athletes and very grateful for our partners.”
Girls flag football plays in the fall. In 2024, more than 250 schools participated in the sport, which is sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association. Teams play during the fall before the playoffs begin. Playoffs culminate in state championship games, which were played last year at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Rome is set to compete against other North Georgia teams in Area 7. Those teams include Dawson County, Dalton Academy, Fannin County, Gilmer County, Heritage (Catoosa), LaFayette, and Ringgold.
“We are very excited to be able to offer a great sport and opportunity for our female athletes at Rome High School,” Rome High Athletic Director Chris Boden says. “The past couple of years, there has been a girls' flag football game at the school, so we know we have a good mix of students who can play and might be interested in coming out for the team.”
Rome will be announcing more information and tryout dates soon.
