Main First Day of School

Principal, Dr. LaRoyce Sublett himself donned a fluorescent green vest over his black suit jacket to direct traffic, Thursday morning, August 5, as faculty greeted students and families on the first day of school at Main Elementary.

Families stopped at the entrance to snap photos of their little ones on their first day of school as faculty members embraced them as they returned for a brand new year. Teachers, both seasoned and brand new, greeted students and parents eagerly as they entered the building and the classrooms.

Kindergarten teacher, Brittany Owens, has been teaching at Main for nine years and she said that the first day of school always brings similar feelings. “This is my first year in Kindergarten, I taught Pre-K all the years prior,” she explained, “so I’m excited and nervous. Since I have been here so long, it’s really neat to see that my first set of kids are already out of school and I got to see them go through all the grades. It’s kind of bittersweet to see them grow up like that.”

Owens says that on the first day of school she spends a lot of time getting to know the students, and the students getting to know each other.

“We do lots of community things in our classroom,” she said. “We want them to know each other’s names as well as our names. We also just try getting used to the routines and rituals of the school day so that the rest of the year goes as smoothly as possible.”

First-time music teacher, Brant Wheeler, expressed his sentiments on the first day of school, “This is my first year teaching overall,” he explained, “so I’m excited to get to know these kids and discover my own methods of teaching, and just to make an impact on the kids.”

Wheeler said that depending on the liberties or limitations of the year, he hopes to plan a couple of concerts for the kids.

“Even though we still have COVID-19 guidelines in place,” Dr. Sublett expressed, “it's a bit less than last year. We’re excited to actually be starting on the first day of school; we’re able to actually let kids and parents into the building, on this first day, as we celebrate welcoming the students back to school.”

“So with our focus being TEAM (together everyone achieves more), I’m excited about the prospects of this school year and how great it’s going to be,” he concluded, “not only for our students but also for our staff and our community.”

Welcome back, Wolves!!!
