RCS Superintendent Dr. Eric Holland Meets with Local Clergy
ROME, GA— “It was five years ago today, September 13, 2022, that we had the same meeting we are having today,” said Dr. Eric Holland, Superintendent of Rome City Schools to three local pastors around the table. “We all met with Mr. (Louis) Byars when I became principal in 2017 and it is surreal to me that the same people are here in 2022 when I am the superintendent.”
Dr. Holland was referring to a meeting he had with Pastors Carey Ingram, Dr. H. Bernard Young, Terrell Shields and Steven Caldwell – all ministers of local churches in Rome, Ga.—shortly after being announced as principal of Rome High School. All were present except for Pastor Caldwell who could not make the meeting due to a scheduling conflict. Rome City Schools’ Superintendent believes that bringing the community together is vital to the success of the system, and he said one way that connection can be formed is through local places of faith.
While at the table, Dr. Holland and the local clergy discussed mentorships, opportunities for connecting with the schools and a plan detailing how community organizations can assist in Rome City Schools. Part of that plan involves monthly meetings to assess the effectiveness of the plan and a chance for community stakeholders to provide feedback to school administrators.
The pastors also provided Dr. Holland with things they would like to see take place in schools. They all agreed that a mentoring program at the elementary, middle and high school level can have a huge impact on student success.
